Experience Space
These Rolls Royce consoles were designed for our clients, Offshore Simulator Company AS, in Alesund, Norway. Rolls Royce were setting up a new Intelligent Asset Management (IAM) experience space at their shared headquarters in Alesund, and consoles were needed to house the computing power needed to drive the various simulations.
The Brief
It was a straight forward brief – design two types of console, one modular to keep manufacturing costs within budget. The modular console (three-man) was to house Alienware PCs, with Microsoft Surface Studios top-mounted.
The single console design was to be used in front of a curved wall, but provision had to be made for a transparent monitor to raise and lower from within the console. There also needed to be a hidden plate for a retractable keyboard.
The Design Process
The initial form was played with in LightWave 3D, a 3D modelling and rendering package which is extremely quick for fleshing out several ideas.
Once we had a form both ourselves and the client were happy with, we exported it to our solid modelling application, Autodesk Inventor, to begin working on the design for manufacture.
Simple design details such as the vertical inset to allow users to stand close to the screen without bumping it with their feet were thought of. As mentioned, duplication of parts was essential to keep manufacturing costs down, and chamfered corners helped aesthetically as well as practically preventing hip nudges.
Production Drawings
The whole design process, from brief to full sets of production ready drawings and 3D CAD files, took six days.
Final Product
These images are the of the final installation at Rolls Royce Marine HQ in Norway, in their Intelligent Asset Management experience centre.
